Legal Aid reforms criticized by Law Society

The Law Society have started the campaign against the swingeing attack on Legal Aid.

Despite the Justice Secretary Ken Clarkes’ ability to appear as ‘liberal’ on social issues after an appearance on R4, the Law Society has reported how damaging the changes may be.

The Justice Secretary asserted that the UK has the most generous provision of any Western Democracy save for Northern Ireland, and the £2 bn savings were justified.

Unfortunately, he seemed not to be properly challenged as to the true effect of the changes proposed on the most vulnerable nor those caught up in the criminal justice system.

Removing access to justice, or access to a lawyer when under arrest is a serious constitutional step to take, as is removing the ability of those who are acquired to recover their legal costs.
