Quality Assured?

The proposal to ensure only those with sufficient experience appear in the Higher Courts was challenged

At a recent meeting organized by Jon Black and others at SAHCA, LCCSA and CLSA, Sam Stein QC attended to attempt to answer concerns held by Solicitor Advocates

The consensus from those present was that the QASA scheme due to be rolled out from next April is flawed and likely to exclude experienced solicitor-advocates from appearing in the Higher Courts.

Sam Stein, who is the CBAs’ representative on the JAG refuted that charge, as did others at the Bar. However, it is not clear whether or not the present proposals will improve quality, or actually restrict the rights of those with higher rights to appear, in order to protect the junior bars’ right of access to work in what are difficult times.
